The Green Bay Packers methodically took care of the Kansas City Chiefs last night and are off to the fast start head coach Mike McCarthy was looking for. With quarterback Aaron Rodgers playing at a crazy high level, this Packers’ team, injuries and all, is going to be tough to beat.
For the second week in a row the Packers’ defense complimented the offense perfectly, which is a big reason the Packers have been able to overcome injuries to Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams, Eddie Lacy, Bryan Bulaga and now Andrew Quarless and Datone Jones. While the laws of attrition would indicate the injuries will have an effect, we haven’t reached that point yet.
The Packers are one of seven 3-0 teams but clearly look like the class of the crop along with the New England Patriots. The Packers will have to stay mentally tough, however, as they will be favored in their next three games and a loss to either the 49ers, Rams or Chargers would definitely be a chink in their armour.
The Packers desperately need to get to the bye week so they can heal up before playing six of their last ten games on the road, including back to back games out west. They will need to be full strength if they are going to survive.
For now it is on to San Francisco, where at the beginning of the season I predicted the Packers would lose their first game of the year. After seeing the 49ers get routed the last two weeks I can’t see the Packers losing out there even if they don’t play their best. The 49ers are a shell of their former selves but the Packers haven’t won in San Fran since 2006 when the Packers were in the midst of an eight game winning streak over the 49ers.
The 49ers have since won four in row but those were all Jim Harbaugh coached teams and two were in the playoffs. Times have changed dramatically the last couple of years. I’ll have more on that later. Going to enjoy this for a little while longer.
Go Pack!
