The year 1999 marked a hallmark of events between NFC rivals Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Mike Holmgren had left Packers to coach Seattle after stellar stint in Green Bay. He recorded 7 straight winning seasons, 9 playoff wins, 6 playoff berths, 2 NFC championships, as well as a victory in the Super Bowl XXXI. Since Mr. Holmgren wanted a new challenge, he took over Seahawks as the new head coach and also manager of the football team.
The rivalry between Packers and the Seahawks
The Seahawks went 9-7, which saw the team break their 10-year playoff drought, thanks to Holmgren’s massive experience under his belt.
But now, it’s also important to note that the success which the Seahawks have enjoyed is not solely attributed to Holmgren’s role in the team. At the time, the outcome of their games was influenced by Ted Thompson — who was also made the VP of football operations at Seattle. Things went from better to best. But along the way, both teams started poaching the same guys that had worked for them and had moved to their rival’s side.
The two teams and their brief history
In the last two decades, the rivalry between the two teams has intensified as both struggled to gain momentum over each other.
It is worth noting that during the first year of Thompson working as a director, a former Packer’s scout (John Schneider) was also poached to work under him. And then in 2002, he went back to Green Bay to take the position of a personnel analyst, working under GM Mike Sherman.
Now in 2005, Packers hunted for Thompson again to play the role of their GM. 5 years later, Seahawks came for John Schneider whom they had unceremoniously taken away from Green Bay. They wanted him as their GM.
From what we can see, the incestuous bloodlines between the two teams runs so deep that they should have a portion of their own in the popular TV series, Game of Thrones.
Under the command of Thompson, John Schneider learned a lesson on how to handle roster positions with newly-welcomed players. This was a move aimed at making the team stay young and cheap. Perhaps it worked to some degree.
At that time, the Seahawks and Packers were considered the 5th and 6th youngest teams in the NFL. Schneider had been very instrumental at working with ‘free-agency-and-trade way’ of approach.
The 2012 opener and 2014 debacle
The rivalry between the two teams was taken a notch higher after the hot 2012 match saw the Packers losing to the Seahawks. Despite the season beginning with a lively kickoff, it didn’t deliver much in favor of the beaten team. This confrontation earned it the ridiculous nickname of ‘’Fail Mary’’. While the Packers collapse in Seattle in the 2014 NFC Championship game didn’t generate a nickname, it undoubtedly will never be forgotten by Packers’ fans.
