The Packers made it all the way to the NFC Championship game last season before coming up short against Atlanta and there is a sense that, with all the injuries they had to deal with, it was not a bad campaign.
It is always tough to lose in a semi-final but, from when they stood at 4-6 in November, reaching the last four was nothing short of a miracle.
Losing both running backs for multiple games and having to scratch around for players to start in the backfield made it tough for coach Mike McCarthy to put together any cohesive game plan.
Add to that a raft of defensive injuries, with three cornerbacks going down at various times in the regular season, and it was always going to be tricky.
Green Bay have already looked to address the running back issue with UTEP’s Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams from BYU taken in the draft.
The duo will provide some much-needed competition for the returning receiver-turned-running back Ty Montgomery.
Jones is UTEP’s career leader in rushing yards and also recorded the best single-season total when he ran for 1,773 yards in the 2016 campaign, and the organisation have high hopes for the rookies.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers came in for some fierce criticism during the Packers’ early struggles and his place in the team and leadership qualities were under scrutiny, but the way the 33-year-old turned things around was sensational.
The California native lifted the team to 10-6 and a play-off berth with some scintillating displays and instilled the confidence that was lacking.
If he can come into the new season with the same mindset then there is every reason to suggest the NFC North winners will make it nine straight play-off appearances next term.
Another positive for the franchise is that the injuries will have healed when the season kicks off and it will feel like there are several new players in the squad after they all return.
Despite having coached the club to victory in Super Bowl XLV and having been at the helm for 11 years, the usually understated McCarthy felt the need to defend his record at times but had the last laugh by putting together a stellar run of results.
The 53-year-old never had any doubts and refused to throw in the towel during the dark times and it is that attitude that has been the hallmark of his tenure and will serve him well going forward.
The Packers will be working hard over the summer to hit the ground running on September 10 when they host Seattle Seahawks in their opener.

Whether the Lambeau Field outfit can go all the way to the Super Bowl, only time will tell and they will need a little luck along the way, but, with some fresh faces in the backfield and Rodgers firing on all cylinders, they will surely not be too far away.
