It wasn’t exactly a statement, wins over bad teams rarely are, but the Green Bay Packers bounced back from an ugly loss in Tampa with a fairly easy win over the rudderless Texans. This win didn’t have a breakout star like some earlier games with the likes of Robert Tonyan or Allen Lazard. No, this was more of a workman-like victory.
This was the Houston Texans not being able to cover the Packers’ Davante Adams. With 196 yards on 13 catches Adams had a field day with the Houston secondary. It was much needed as the Packers were without star running back Aaron Jones, who was a late scratch after injuring his calf in practice last week. Aaron Rodgers was a pedestrian-like, for him anyway, 23-out-of-34 for 283 yards. Oh, and four touchdown passes, including a 45-yard beauty to Adams. The Packers got a nice game out of running back Jamal Williams, who, in some ways, is the heart and soul of that offense. Dude loves life. And it was Williams and the offense who put the game away when they had too.
Well, my hunch about the defense was right. The Packers played one of their best games of the year in keeping the explosive DeShaun Watson in check, even though he threw for over 300 yards. They didn’t give up huge plays and the Packers made several big third down stops. They also made one huge fourth down stop that killed a drive that could have ended with the Texans within one score of the Packers.
I was right on when I predicted the Packers would get a late turnover, they did (I’ll forget the part about a Crosby game winning field goal). Hard to believe the Packers last TO prior to that was in week three against the Saints. That is still an area that needs a lot of improvement.
The Packers certainly took care of business, but this one definitely got deleted from the DVR posthaste. But these are the kind of wins good teams can’t afford to lose. From here the going gets a lot tougher, other than the Vikings this weekend, only the Jaguars in three weeks is a pushover. Every other team the Packers will face is in the hunt for the playoffs, and yes, that includes the suddenly resurgent Detroit Lions.
I liked what I saw yesterday, when I started getting nervous the Packers stepped up on both sides of the ball and put the game away. Now they just need to get some of their injured players back. Would be nice to be full strength for once. On to the Vikings.
