Now that the Green Bay Packers have made quarterback Jordan Love the highest paid player in the league their Super Bowl window officially opened. And it comes with a tentative end date. Love is now under contract through 2028. So that means he’ll need a new deal after the 2027 season. The Packers need to win a Super Bowl by then because it will be hard to keep the team together after that.
Love’s new deal is essentially five years, as shown in the diagram below. So really $44 million per year. I think it’s a good deal for both sides. You get paid for what you are going to do, not what you have done. Now Love has to prove his worth.
The reason they have to win now is they will have to start paying all this young talent they have on rookie deals in a few years. Wide receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs will be the first ones. They will be followed by Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft possibly earning big money with their play the next few years. And that’s only looking at the receiver position. The Packers have young talent all over.
So it would be nice to win it all while you got this young talent on rookie deals. The salary cap will go up but it will still be a challenge to keep everybody together. The Packers definitely have a golden opportunity right now to win a Super Bowl. With a unprecedented third-straight franchise QB and a well stocked roster, the time to win is now.
