Fitting end to an up and down season

The Green Bay Packers 22-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles to was a microcosm of their entire 2024 season. The same mistakes that plagued them all season were front and center in ending the Packers’ season. Stupid penalties, dropped passes, turnovers, and a defense that is great 90% of the time but simply couldn’t make a key stop when it had to. All of those things happened against the Eagles.

The biggest concern of the offseason will be figuring out what happened to Jordan Love and the Packers’ passing offense. You would think with running back Josh Jacobs wearing down defenses the way he did the passing offense would thrive. Turns out it was just the opposite. It starts with the Packers’ receivers I think. Nobody stepped up this to be a go-to guy and as a group they are pretty much just guys. A veteran receiver should be top priority this offseason.

The Packers’ defense was vastly improved over last year. The defense played great against the Eagles for the most part today. But as soon as the Packers pulled within one score they let them go right down field again to put the game away. The Packers need to find a way to get consistent pressure on the quarterback from their front four.

I think head coach Matt LaFleur should be on the hot seat going into next season. Three straight losses and the same undisciplined play all season long. There are no consequences for mistakes and thus they never end. Every week it’s “I got to be better” but nobody ever gets better. Same with Love. The offense was very stale the last few games and LaFleur couldn’t figure out how to fix it.

Can’t win being the youngest team every year

It will be an interesting offseason. The Love contract is over and done with and the Packers can and should be players in free agency. The NFL Draft is in Green Bay and general manager Brian Gutekunst has been know to make a trade or two during the draft so that could be really exciting.

I think the name of the Packers Highlight Film this year should be “A Year Away.” Throughout the season that was the feeling I was getting. Add some veteran help and this team will have a chance. You can’t win a Super Bowl being the youngest team in the league every year. That was painfully evident when left guard Elgton Jenkins got hurt today. The Packers had no one to replace him and the offense was stymied even more because of it.

Let’s see what Gutey can do this offseason. It took Aaron Rodgers until his third year as a started to win a Super Bowl. It took Brett Favre five years. If Love falls in between that I’d be just fine with it. But he needs help to get it done.
