Is the Packers roster good enough to win it all?

It’s been a relatively quiet offseason for the Packers with just two middle of the road free agent signings and no major losses of note. So all that remains for the Packers to improve their roster is the NFL Draft coming up in a few weeks. Is the Packers’ roster good enough to win the Super Bowl as is? Here is my highly uniformed view of things.

Quarterback – No need for any moves here. At least not with the top two guys anyway. The Packers struck gold with Malik Willis last year when he helped them to three wins. He didn’t look very good against the Bears in the last game, though, so the jury is still out.

Hopefully we see a healthy Jordan Love next year. He was clearly affected by a knee injury on the last play of the season opener against the Eagles. He probably came back too soon from that I don’t think he was right the rest of the year. Love was OK but was at his worst in all the big games. HIs slow starts were simply mind-boggling.

Love started the season playing like Brett Favre. He was trying to rifle everything in there and was getting picked off left and right. Then he went just the opposite and stood in the pocket too long waiting for somebody to get open and then checked down. We need to see the carefree Love that was picking teams apart down the stretch in 2023. Staying healthy and getting some help from his receivers will help a lot.

The rest of the roster

Running Back – The Packers are solid here with Josh Jacobs and Emanuel Wilson, should he return. They still have Chris Brooks and MasShawn Lloyd, whom they are very high on.

Tight End – The Packers could probably use some help here. Other than Tucker Kraft, who should be used more in the passing game, they just have guys. Maybe Luke Musgrave can finally live up to his billing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they address this position in the draft.

Wide Receiver – This is one position I know they will address in the draft. In fact, I think they might move up to do so. The Packers have a few good guys, but no standouts. Jayden Reed is the closet thing and he may very well take that next step in year three. As may Dontayvion Wicks. But not adding a veteran in free agency I think was kind of risky. After one of the dumbest coaching decisions in Packers’ history, Christian Watson is out of pretty much all of 2025. What LaFleur was thinking by playing him in a meaningless game coming off injury cannot be explained.

The Packers need instant help here and that isn’t available at 23. General manager Brian Gutekunst is going to shock the world and move up and draft a receiver in the first round of the draft from Lambeau Field. The crowd goes wild. Not sure which one they will target, but my guess would be the guy with the biggest history of drops or is coming off an injury.

Offensive line – Well, after the dust settled I kind of like the new-look offensive line with Aaron Banks stepping in at left guard and Elgton Jenkins moving to center. If everybody else returns all they need here is depth. That was woefully on display against the Eagles in the playoffs last season.

Defense enters year two of the 4-3

Defensive line – The d-line was OK but the story of the season was a lack of pass rush from the front four. Maybe year two in the system will help Rashan Gary get back to his old self. Devonte Wyatt showed some signs of life when on the field but other Kenny Clark they don’t have much here. Guessing multiple additions will be made in a defensive line heavy draft.

Linebacker – Again, the Packers are OK. Edgerrin Cooper is a rising star and Quay Walker is solid. Maybe Ty’Ron Hopper makes a leap this year. Probably going to need some depth here.

Safety – Safety is solid with Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams and Javon Bullard in the rotation. Kitan Oladapo may be a guy to watch.

Cornerback – Everything hangs in the balance at CB. Maybe Jaire Alexander is part of the big trade I’m predicting the Packers to make. All signs point to him not being on the roster next year. If he is and is on the field, the defense is much better. I like the signing of Nate Hobbs because I have no faith in Keisean Nixon. And Carrington Valentine is just a guy. Probably need to add some guys here.

I know it doesn’t matter what I think, but I think they need some star power at more positions. This is just a bunch of no-names. One season away from being also-rans. But like Gutey said, time to start competing for championships, right?
