The Great Northern Trendkill

Last year the Packers blew out the Vikings and the Cowboys who both subsequently fired their head coaches. Sunday the Packers put a beat-down on the Bears that wasn’t reflected by the score and while Lovie Smith is obviously safe, Mike Martz might not be. Nor might be GM Jerry Angelo.

Not for a very long time has the difference in talent been so lopsided between the two teams. The Bears have drafted poorly and their free agent bandaids haven’t panned out either. On the other hand the Packers have done one of those extremely well and left the other well enough alone. Two teams trending in opposite directions, that is for sure.

I could easily see Martz replaced if the Bears lose to Carolina this week. The greatest show on turf doesn’t work in a cow pasture, especially with no receivers.

The Packers turn their attention to the Denver Broncos and Kyle Orton, who’s grip on the quarterback position is getting more tenuous each week. The Tim Tebow era may begin again in Lambeau Field this Sunday. It may not be like getting two head coaches fired but an offensive coordinator and a starting quarterback ain’t bad.

Of course we have to play the game first and the Packers shouldn’t underestimate Orton, who has had some good games at Lambeau, beating the old gunslinger a few times. The Packers better not take home field for granted or they could get bit like last year against Miami.

The Broncos are a bad team with no rushing game, again, kind of like Miami last year, a weak passing game and average defense. On paper the the Packers should win by two touchdowns, but this isn’t Strat-0-Matic, it doesn’t come down to a roll of the dice. If the Packers aren’t prepared to play like they have been, even a bad team can beat them.

The early forecast is for upper sixties and sunny, it should be a glorious day at Lambeau Field. How can you not be ready to play football on a day like that? The Pack will be ready.
