How good are the Packers? The media thinks the Packers are either the Super Bowl favorites or just another good team that hasn’t proved their being yet. To me the Packers are both. I think they are a good team bordering on great. I see many similarities to the 1995-1996 Packers.
Like the Packers’ team that turned around the franchise and put the Packers back on the NFL map, this current Packers’ team has a chance to do great things, injuries not withstanding. The Packers have a star quarterback who is quietly becoming one one of the league’s best. And like those Reggie White led teams of the 90s, Aaron Rodgers has a great defense to support him.
Maybe the Packers’ four-game winning streak has gone to my head. Maybe I’m forgetting about our 3-3 start. But I really do think this is the best Packers’ team I’ve seen since the underachieving teams of the Mike Sherman era. The Packers under Sherman were one of the best teams in the NFC in the early 2000s but even with Favre could not get over the hump.
I think McCarthy’s approach to the devastating injuries the Packers have suffered and the success they have achieved since proves he is an excellent coach. Add defensive coordinator Dom Capers to the mix and the Packers have all the ingredients in place to make a realistic run for the Super Bowl.
As usual, I’m probably overreacting. You all know me by now. But the feeling I got from Sunday’s win over the Vikings is hard to play down. The Packers had everything to lose and instead of choking they came out and dominated their most despised opponent on their own field. It was a thing of beauty.
Confidence is high.
